Coffee break at Rocketeer | Interview with the founders of Velluto
Leopold Wagner and Daniel Wetscha founded the start-up Velluto alongside their studies. Velluto offers accessories that combine style with functionality.
How do you drink your coffee?
- Leo: Just a simple espresso with a little sugar.
- Daniel: I prefer it as a latte macchiato with oat milk.
Who or what inspires you?
- Leo: I am inspired by people who are passionate about something and who make a positive contribution to other people.
- Daniel: I find it very inspiring to watch other people's success. I have often seen people from my wide circle suddenly achieve a breakthrough or great success in what they are good at/do. That shows me how realistic something like that is and that it is really valuable to believe in your dreams.
What is Velluto?
Our goal is to give passionate people the opportunity to express their passion through our products. Our products represent the best quality and are characterized by their niche relevance; they are also social enablers.
What motivated you to found a start-up during your studies?
- Leo: We have always been enthusiastic about founding companies and have often been to the Rocketeer Festival. I have always been fascinated by founders who create a company from “nothing” with the potential to make our world a little better and solve the problems of countless people.
- Daniel: I've always been fascinated by how you can earn a little extra pocket money using the internet. As a student, I was able to earn a few euros with the music on my own label right at the start of my studies. I think that once you've had this experience, you don't want to miss the feeling of this form of independence. This drive led to a number of business ideas developing during my studies, and Velluto is one of them!
How did you and your co-founder come up with the idea of combining pocket and glasses cleaning cloths?
The idea actually came about during a trip to Italy when we were sitting by the lake with our sunglasses on and having a drink. Everyone knows the problem that greasy glasses can ruin your vision. We only had a run-of-the-mill glasses cleaning cloth with us, which didn't even really clean our sunglasses. So we thought that this had to work better. It was probably the Italian vibe that led to our first cloth, the "Gelato" in an ice cream design. The pocket square and the possibility of cleaning displays with our cloths only came later, as we naturally found multiple uses more exciting for our customers.
Our first impulse, however, was to combine a boring product, such as a glasses cleaning cloth, with the best quality and function with a design that reflects our passion for Italy, and so the idea of Velluto (Italian for "velvet") was born.
In which direction should Velluto develop in the future? Will there be further products?
