This is how you clean your glasses properly!
How do you clean your glasses properly and what should you bear in mind when cleaning them? If you wear glasses, you'll certainly know the nasty feeling of wearing dirty glasses. As soon as the sun shines, all you can see is the driver on your glasses. This can be particularly dangerous when driving. Glasses are only useful if you clean them properly and regularly. Maybe you've already asked yourself how to clean them properly - like at the optician. That's exactly what we'll discuss in this blog post.
The most important thing first
Avoid cleaning your glasses with a T-shirt or tissues, as this creates so-called "micro-scratches" which cause your lenses to wear out much faster, and this is how you get the most enjoyment out of your glasses. The micro-scratches dull your lenses and with each additional scratch your vision will become worse until the glasses gradually appear "blind". Scratches cannot be removed from plastic or mineral lenses. Even if the blemish only appears cosmetic, light is scattered through the micro-fine grooves, irritating the eye. New lenses are often then due much sooner than if you had opted for professional cleaning. The same applies to displays, although the micro-scratches are noticed later because the screen brightness often makes them invisible. The little culprits only show up when the "black screen" is turned off.
Step 1: Clean the lenses
First, you should rub a microfiber cloth or a folded damp cleaning cloth loosely over the lenses to remove coarse dirt. Microfiber cloths are ideal for cleaning at home and on the go , as they can be easily stored in a trouser pocket, glasses case or perhaps as a pocket square.
Microfiber cloths do not clean effectively when dry, especially when it comes to greasy dirt. It is better to moisten the cloth with a cleaning spray first and then clean it. Spray the spray onto the microfiber cloth, not onto the lenses. Frameless glasses have drill holes in the lenses, and normal glasses frames usually have screw holes. Liquid seeping in can have a negative effect in the long term. It is therefore ideal to put the cleaning agent onto the cloth first. This way the glasses are not damaged, and there is still enough moisture on them to effectively absorb dirt, make-up or skin oil, for example.
Step 2: Clean the glasses frame
The frame of the glasses also needs to be cleaned and can react sensitively to improper care. A good cleaning can be achieved with lukewarm , running water. The glasses should always be held by the lens that is being cleaned. This avoids tension that can cause the frame to warp or, in the worst case, even break. For hygiene reasons, it is advisable to clean the temples behind the ear and the nose pad from time to time. This also improves the fit, as the glasses slip less due to the skin fat that is removed.
Step 3: Clean the microfiber cloth
The microfiber cloth should be washed regularly from time to time - ideally at 30 degrees (maximum 40 degrees) and without fabric softener . If you use fabric softener, the microfiber cloth will start to cause streaks the next time you clean it and will therefore be unusable.
